Feb. 11, 2022, in an article titled, “The Persistence of Denmark Tech: How a Two-Year HBCU Survived Closure,” CCNewsnow.com covered how Denmark Technical (DTC) College President Dr. Willie. L. Todd, Jr. came to the two-year historically Black college or university (HBCU) at a time when rumors circulated about the school closing.
In 2018, the Southern Association of College and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) issued a report that led to Denmark Tech’s probation. When a two-year institution is put on probation, it’s given a specific period of time to make changes in order to maintain its accreditation for educational standards. By 2020, Dr. Todd was named the ninth president of the college. And by 2021, the probation was lifted.
The article states that as president of the school, “Todd has overseen an enormous overhaul of the institution, inside and out. He’s led the restructuring of finances and academics, the overhaul of an aging campus, and he’s working to create a culture of caring and belonging for students, faculty, and staff. It’s all part of his ten-year strategic plan to get DTC back on track in its 75th year.”
As part of his overhaul for the school, Dr. Todd implemented the YouScience Platform to “help students better understand themselves and where they want to make an impact.”
